CONEY ISLAND — He didn't bring a search warrant for his weekend exploits, but actor Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays a TV detective, tore up the beach in Brooklyn anyway.
With no cameras rolling, he put on quite a show in his civilian clothes — or bathing suit — and with his family won first-prize in Coney Island's Sand Sculpture contest.
It was a perfect beach day, and sand castles abounded, but the serious sculptors arrived at noon to begin shaping their giant mounds of sand into something a bit greater.
By 2:45 p.m., as the judges began to make their rounds, the stretch of beach between West 10th and West 12th streets along the boardwalk was decorated with larger-than-life sea turtles, mermaids and palatial kingdom estates.
Curious beachgoers watched from Riegelmann Boardwalk or strolled between the artists at work. Some looked fearful of taking an errant step into the delicate works-in-progress.
Judges handed out awards in five categories, child alone, adult alone, group of adults, group of children and mixed groups.
D'Onofrio and his 8-member family took home the first prize in the 'mixed' category, for an elaborate treasure chest that was guarded by sand skeletons, and decorated with gold coins.
"We love pirates!" said a Carin van der Donk, a former model and D'Onofrio's wife, as they sculpted.

Is that Elias in the green? I can't get over how fast the kids are growing up. Wow! Congratulations to the D'Onofrio family!!! Very cool!
What a fun family day, thanks.
Congratulations to D'Onofrio family! well how nice to see them all together, and this beautiful hobby that will always be remembered for their children.
Looks like they're going to make this an annual event. I remember the pics from last year. Absolute coolness.
Margaret...stop leaving these comments, please
Oh wow, the boys changed a lot over the last year. Cool that they do the sandcastle thing the second year in a row.
What a happy, all very good looking family, the boys are so handsome. Sorry, that someone on here has to ruin this by whatever nonsense comments are being made and having to be deleted. Glad to see them all having fun.
Yes, that's Elias in the green, JoJo. They're getting so big now and are handsome young men. Leila is a knockout. His children are beautiful. Really nice to see him relaxing and spending time with his family after working so hard this year. Rose, thank you, it comes with the territory.
FABULOUS....
I understand what you are saying Nantz. That picture with Luka, I'll bet he was helping carry sand in his little shoe, kids are so funny at that age LOL
These are so awesome. So nice to see them all together having fun. I probably wouldn't have recognized those two boys had they not been with Vincent and Carin. Wonderful to see them not afraid to get dirty and have a good time. Congratulations to Vincent and family.
What a beautiful family! Lovely to see them all happy and having fun!
Love your new banner Nantz! Just a question that has been on my mind the last couple of days, and then saw this comment from Heath Ledger's dad. ("We can't blame Heath or the character," Kim Ledger said.) It stunned me that he had to come out and say that about his son, I sure hope people aren't going to start blaming actors and movies when horrific situations like this happen. Thinking about if actors, actresses, writers will maybe think otherwise, considering more, if you will, how they might stand back and think, wow, this is something I just don't want to write or act in. Everybody is impacted from the actions of this madman, but when one spends their life making movies and acting, I can't imagine how they must feel, they set out to make something for people to enjoy and to escape for two hours. I sure hope that this will not be the case, because people like Holmes will be around terrorizing people, whether their insane obsessions are from something they saw or read from a movie, politics, video games, TV. Just wondered if others have been thinking about this as well.
Thank you very much, Rose! I think he was very calculated and used the character to have people make it seem it was part of the 'festivities' for the screening.
With all the loudness from the movie, and the darkness in the theater I certainly would have thought it was either coming from the movie or some promotion if you will.
Margaret, I mean this in the most sincerest way...do you think it would help you if you went to a professional for some help? Maybe if you talk to someone they can help you figure things out so you can move on in your life. I'm asking nicely that you not leave these comments; thank you.
Maybe if you didn't get on the internet and see these photos you could work on things that will move you towards a healthier life and healing.
Maybe you could spend more time knitting your lovely items and enjoying that talent you have.
Let me get this straight; I never said you were crazy but I think you could benefit with some help in talking to a professional. I don't think it's helpful for your mother and brother to say such things to you. Maybe you could try and find another person to talk to other than the lady you say yawned at you.
Maybe you fell behind because you were too upset because you were concentrating on a celebrity instead of your art.
thanks for listening to me. good night, nantz.
Anytime, Margaret, I mean that...you sleep well, good night
Nantz you must never respond to a troll, this person obviously is one of these attention seeking people who obviously has a problem with bloggers whom post Vincent's family on their blogs-these images are all over the internet and practically every Vincent fan site and Vincent and Carin have no issues with showing their children in public-why should they hide them? This was a local event, and there were camera's there both TV and still. Its not as if they were private images or something like that, suggest never talking to such idiots and hiding behind an "anon" is just cowardice.
On another note thought, I wondered who the girl with the ponytail was and tall boy in the checked shorts as well.
Thanks, Jane. I am familiar with who this person is and I don't want to antagonize her. I'd rather be helpful and engaging rather than just dismiss her as a 'troll' as you put it. She is someone who is lost right now and needs some help. She did not hide behind the name of 'Anonymous' and stated her name very clearly in her comments. I deleted them because I thought it better not to post what could be viewed as derogatory remarks. The girl with the ponytail is perhaps a niece and the boy looks to be a relative of Carin due to looking so much like her.
