INDIEWIRE
I found this tidbit regarding 'Chained' from an interview with Jennifer Lynch during her recent visit to the Cannes Film Festival.
(excerpted)
Have you made cuts or changes to “Chained” based on the MPAA’s NC-17 decision?
Yeah, we just went into the flame room, and we’re removing a lot of stuff in a particular scene. And we’ll see what the MPAA says. The flame room is where you go in to paint out blood or change things, it’s a CG room. I’m hoping that this satisfies them. I’m sad to see the scene go from its original intention. I hope I get to do a director’s cut and have all the things in there that I want in there. What’s weird is, I think horror fans are going to be shocked that I got an NC-17 for this film. I hope that they’re not disappointed in me, because I never ever thought we’d get an NC-17. I thought for sure we’d get an R based on what else is getting R’s. People shouldn’t see that film at 9:15 in the morning, and that’s when [the MPAA members] were watching it. So already I felt like, Geez, this isn’t a breakfast movie! Even I know that! [laughs]

Thanks for posting this, really, really wish she didn't have to delete anything from the film. I'd really like to see a picture of this group who viewed the movie at 9:15 in the morning. Mentally I have the picture, and don't like it. Like the new banner Nantz!
You're very welcome, Rose, I was hoping that she would mention something about 'Chained' in the interview and lo and behold there it was on the second page. You can tell she is very disappointed in having to change her creative vision and as an artist myself I can't say I blame her. I would probably refer to the 'flame' room as 'up in flames' room. Such a shame but hope she gets her director's cut. Thanx for the compliment on the banner...always fun to do.
What gets me is a bunch of clowns in a room deciding what is, or is not appropriate for viewing. Sure would like to see the director's cut if she is able to make it.
It's laughable when you see the caliber of commercials currently being shown...especially the 'bathroom' humor ones. 'Mommy, I went poo-poo' and going in the bathtub...I find that more offensive and I wonder if any of the concerned parents would raise an eyebrow at the Maybelline commercial that shows a model putting a piece of plastic over her fuschia painted lips and breathing in. Clearly a safety issue. There was a commercial for Windex with birds flying into a patio door and other birds laughing about it. I wrote to Johnson and Johnson and told them about the hundreds of accidents that children have had running into patio doors with some being killed. They removed the content. Bottom line is that I think 17 year olds can handle this film as it was intended to be.
I think 17 year olds can handle this film like is also. There is one commercial that I must admit not sure how to take it. It is the Etrade baby looking into the nursery with a new dad, and then all of a sudden his little friend, think his name is Tommy, is hanging on one of the nursery cribs. When asked what he is doing, Tommy says speed dating. My husband and I have now looked at each other many times, and just go, something is way not appropriate with this commercial. The Windex commercial I'm familiar with, but not the other two. Yes, many accidents a year happen with patio doors, I myself have walked into one, though with me and others we don't pay attention.
I knew that the kid's name was wrong, looked it up, Bobby not Tommy...
I know the commercial you're talking about and I suppose they think it's innocent and fun using babies to get their message and brand out there. The thing about the Windex commercial is that they made it seem like a cartoon where it was funny to slam into a patio door and we all know it isn't but children might replicate what they see.
Thanks for theupdate. Yeah, I cross my fingers for the R and a Director's Cut (original showing at film festivals).
P.S. OMG, great new header, Nantz.
What does it take to get a director's cut? I would think that a director's cut would be a given when something's released to DVD.
Love the banner, "The Human Puzzle"
Thank you, Antje, and good catch, vikeau, LOL.
vikeau, a director's cut would be 'saved' scenes she would have put together in a DVD that was her original intention for the film. It would be her true vision.
Well I'm hoping that the scences that hit the cutting room floor will make it to the DVD release.
As much as I'm happy that she'll edit it to an R because this means a wider release, it makes me sad, too. All this talk about authorities deciding what's appropriate and what isn't kinda irks me. AS IF there was something like a "grabable" set of values or morals... when there isn't.
Great find! Yes, I'm hoping we get to see the full version eventually, too! And yes, Nantz, awesome banner!!
Thank you, Ruby, it looks like that certain program didn't go away all the way. Hannah, it irks me too because that true vision will not be the one that is at any festivals or at the theatres and that stinks. By the time it goes to DVD with the full version it will be so after the fact. I hate that.
